Research Project Topic

Hello!
Here is what I plan on researching for my paper:
Frida Kahlo, her art, and how her art was a way of expressing herself and her life.
I will use an art therapy as a "lens" to show how her art was not just an autobiography
but a therapeutic way of dealing with her difficult life.

This looks like a really good topic. I like the lens you chose--art as a coping mechanism sounds intriguing. I did some quick browsing through databases, and there is a whole subject devoted to therapeutic art. Some specific databases I thought might be helpful were PsychInfo and Art Abstracts.
The article "Frida Kahlo, l'art pour survivre" by Myriam Boutoulle might be helpful--you'd have to request it through a consortium loan. It discusses Frida Kahlo's personal tragedies and their reflection in her art.
Also, there is a book called, Frida Kahlo: Painting Her Life, by Lila Guzman and Rick Guzman, which seems to fit your lens well.

Hey Jana! Good presentation today. I think Dr. CJS and the class had some good comments. Here's a recap:

We talked about how you might be using a psychological lens, but you were worried that since Frida essentially had been a case study, your question might have already been answered.
Suggestions started out as: Exploring why she needed therapy... Using her as an example of people who use art as therapy.

I think Joel had the idea of it being "necessary" for these tragic things to happen to her to become a great artist. It was decided that this might be hard to prove.

Then we moved on to how her artwork evolved as she evolved as a person... How it differed from after the trolly accident to after the miscarriage.
Dr. Smith (I believe) suggested a focus on self-esteem. Perhaps look up case studies of just that, and then put that [lens] over Frida's body/self-esteem issues.
Then, at the end, you had an idea that seemed to spark your own interest the most. This idea pertained to dealing with miscarriages- the responses to and using art as therapy for women with miscarriages.

I think the last 2 or 3 will be your best bet... Hope this helps jog your memory of today's talk!
